Jo AnnHello Jo Ann,

I think you may find some helpful information at either or both of the following sites.

International Dutch Oven Society: http://www.idos.com

Lodge Manufacturing (The makers of DOs): http://www.lodgemfg.com

These two sites have what you would problably enjoy.

Good Luck

Jo AnnI love [:D] my Dutch ovens s. I currently have 13 DO s and use most of them. The IDOS site has a lot of links as do a number of Boy Scout sites. There is a Texas Dutch oven group also as well as a number of lists. I will be happy to answer any questions. I just gave one of our DIL s a camping DO and she will use it in the oven as well as camping. She got interested watching me.

Jo AnnBill,

You asked for it!

Your post said you have 13 Dutch Ovens. I have a few questions for you:

1. Which ones do you use the most?

2. Which size(s) would you recomend for a couple while camping?

3. Can you cook small meals in a big DO? (eg. meal for 2 in 12 Qt.)

4. How good are the various stoves that can be used with a DO (I think one is called the " Lift N Cook" or something like that.

5. What are the best beginner type recipe books or recipe sources that you would recomend?

For those looking for websites, consider http://www.ida.net/users/cm2/dutch.htm.

Have a good New Year

Jo AnnWhat?! Dutch ovens not worth it?! But...but...that s where all our best meals come from!!

Another good DO site is the Lone Star DO Society

And you DON T need an expensive Lodge pot, Jo Ann...we have an inexpensive Chinese pot, and it s been doing fine by us for two years and two dozen trips now.

Jo AnnOK CyberBiker, here s my reply.

1. Which ones do you use the most?

I use my 12" DO the most as it handles most of my needs for more than 2 people. I have: 2 8" DO s, 3 10" DO s, 3 12" DO s, a 12" deep DO, 1 14" DO, a 14" deep DO, a 15" MACA DEEP DO and a 16" DO. I also have a DO table and I use the Volcane stove.

2. Which size(s) would you recomend for a couple while camping?

When camping I usually take a 12" and a 10" for the two of us. I ve also occassionally included the 8" for a small amount of biscuits.

3. Can you cook small meals in a big DO? (eg. meal for 2 in 12 Qt.)

I would not normally recommend a 12" just for two unless it was a deep one and you were cooking a chicken or tall roast. I would normally use the 10" just for the two of us. A 10" would normally handle two Cornish game hens although the 12" would offer more room.

4. How good are the various stoves that can be used with a DO (I think one is called the " Lift N Cook" or something like that.

I know of that stove, but am not familiar with it. I use the Volcano stove and am very happy with it. http://www.rmvolcano.com/

5. What are the best beginner type recipe books or recipe sources that you would recomend?

Here are some web sites to help you.

There are so many DO sites it is impossible to list them all. Besides, I d always be hungry.

Jo AnnI ve been collecting dutch oven recipes for several years now, and keep thinking I ll buy a DO one of these days. BUT, it s just the two of us, and most recipes could feed an army! Even if I cut the recipes down, I m still unsure if I d use it!

What I should do is camp next to folks who cook with an DO, then just show up for supper every evening![:D]

E-mail my Dw (she is Iwantapopup). We use a dutch oven for camping and she is a girlscout leader. And boy can she cook with one. Sometimes she makes the whole meal in one pot. Which makes clean up really easier.

I want to get a dutch oven, but TBPB (DH or as he is sometimes known as The Big Poopy Booger) does not think its worth buying. When i saw you could make pizza in it without a fire, but with charcol, well, it kinda inspires me...does anyone have a favorite list of recipes or web site with recipes that they have actually tried??? Cuz i would like to see if there are other things that i could make that would make the cost worth while.
